Courage Over Confidence
Do it scared. Do it messy. Just do it.
“Fake it ’til you make it.”
“Believe in yourself.”
“Confidence is key.”
“Walk in like you own the place.”
When it comes to cliché confidence quotes, we’ve heard them all. But as I sat down as a guest on my first big podcast interview, none of them worked. They didn’t stop my voice from quivering, my thoughts from racing, or my heart from pounding against my chest.
An hour later, it was over. It felt like I had blacked out. I couldn’t even recall what we discussed—I was just relieved to have made it through. And to my surprise, no one had a clue. The interview turned out great.
That was the first of thousands of brave acts that followed in my life and career. And it had little to do with confidence and everything to do with courage.
That moment of vulnerability in front of the microphone—where I could barely hold it together—taught me that confidence is not the key. It’s the courage to take action despite fear that opens the door to true growth. Because courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s the decision to move forward in spite of it. And that is where real, lasting power lies.
I’ve faced the loss of a friend, a failed contract, and major career shifts. And yet, in that moment, braving an interview felt just as terrifying. My mind and body couldn’t tell the difference.
But what my mind does know is that in the face of fear, doubt, insecurity, and uncertainty… I still do it. Shaky knees and all, I stand firm.
If you’ve ever felt like confidence was something you had to wait for before making a move—whether it’s a tough conversation, a bold decision, or chasing a big dream—this newsletter is for you.
Let’s talk about how courage is the real game-changer and how it turns the mythical idea of confidence into the result of a proven habit.
The Courage Loop: Acting Scared to Build Confidence
The moment you step into the unknown—with your heart racing and your mind screaming, “Don’t do it!”—that’s where the magic happens. In that very moment of discomfort, when failure feels like a real possibility, you’re on the verge of unlocking a massive shift in your life.
Failure is your secret weapon. Most of us run from it. We avoid it, disguise it, or hope we’re “good enough” to escape it altogether. But what if I told you that failing on purpose is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself?
